NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota has been named the AFC player of the week for the rookie’s record-setting debut.

The NFL announced the honor Wednesday.

Mariota became the first rookie in NFL history to post a perfect 158.3 passer rating on the opening weekend, and he became the first rookie to throw four touchdown passes in one half. He joined Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton as the only NFL rookies with four TD passes in a season opener.

With a 42-14 win over Tampa Bay, Mariota led Tennessee to the largest victory margin by a rookie starter since 1948.

The Heisman Trophy winner from Oregon also became the first Titans rookie to win offensive player of the week in a season opener.
