Homers that they should be, the mayors of Fort Collins and Boulder are staking baskets of local goods on the outcome of the historic rivalry football game Saturday between Colorado State University and the University of Colorado.

How high the stakes are, exactly, is to be determined.

But Boulder city manager Jane Brautigam and Mayor Matt Appelbaum have promised to sent a basket of Boulder-made products if CSU prevails in the Rocky Mountain Showdown at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Fort Collins Mayor Wade Troxell and city manager Darin Atteberry have promised a “Visit Fort Collins” basket if the Buffs win.

Troxell, a CSU grad and former captain of the Rams football team, noted that despite the on-field rivalry, the cities work closely together on regional issues, including transportation and sustainability.

Appelbaum, too, cited the opportunity to showcase “two progressive communities that are national leaders on sustainability and innovation.”

But he couldn’t help but throw a little shade about the big game: “Sheep versus Buffalo? Is it really a competition?”
