Firefighters battled a wildland fire Friday in the foothills along the border of Jefferson and Gilpin counties.
The Black Hawk Ridge fire, from which a plume of black smoke billowed, burned about an acre of timber Friday near Colorado 46 and Bear Paw Road, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Firefighters with the Golden Gate Fire Protection District responded and were aided by a helicopter making water drops.
The fire was reported at about 2 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.
There were no reports of injuries or structures lost.
Authorities were concerned, however, about the fire running through heavy strands of dry timber.
The sheriff’s office issued a level 1 evacuation — be prepared to leave — to 12 households.
Late in the day the sheriff’s office said the fire was 70 percent contained. Firefighters expected full containment sometime during the night Friday.
