Interview with Dusty and Ainsley Hettinger, owners

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: We own a landscape company named Rocky Mountain Pond and Waterfall, and wanted a nursery that would feed the landscape business. We provide plant material and trees and higher quality products.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: We specialize in plant materials that fit our climate and elevation. There are a lot of trees that you can plant in Denver that won’t work in Parker or Castle Rock. Being in Franktown, most of our work is in Douglas County. We really focus on the people within our area.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: We like the fact that we can grow a large amount of our own plants and we can control the quality. And it’s really cool being in the landscape business; we can go back to properties and see the plants really flourishing and know that we grew a lot of them from seeds.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Winter.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: One cool thing about the Sprucery is that we have a lot landscape displays from home- and-garden shows that we set up in the nursery. We have big waterfalls, fireplaces and outdoor kitchens. We recycle them from our shows and we never have to throw that stuff away. We also have chickens and fainting goats on the property. And Izzy the dog. A lot of our customers love coming and seeing the animals.
