El Paso County authorities say a man shot by a Fountain police officer on Thursday afternoon has died.
Police say the shooting happened about 2:45 p.m. in the 700 block of Legend Oak Drive as two officers responded to a disturbance.
“Officers responded to the scene and upon arrival officers were involved in a shooting,” police said in a news release. “Standard shooting protocol has been initiated and the El Paso County Sheriff’s office has been requested under our officer involved shooting protocol.”
The person shot, who has been identified only as a male, was pronounced dead about 5:15 p.m., the county sheriff’s office said.
Further information on the shooting was not immediately released.
only one of the officers at the scene fired at the man and that the officer has been placed on leave. Police say the person shot was armed with a handgun, the newspaper said.
The last officer-involved shooting in Fountain was in 2012, according to The Gazette.
Police say the shooting was captured by the officers’ body cameras.
