Interview with Kristen Zurek, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: My inspiration came from taking my first barre fitness class in New York City — and falling in love. A dancer back then, barre training completely changed the strength and tone of my body. But after 22 years of ballet, I ultimately decided that a dance career was not the right path for me. I started teaching barre classes in Littleton and Denver in 2009. Barre had not hit the mainstream yet, so I took it upon myself to be one of the regional trailblazers in the field. I opened the Ballet Physique in downtown Littleton in 2010, which was met with rapid success. Our second location in Lone Tree opened in 2014.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: We were the first independently owned barre studio to open in Denver. The Ballet Physique workout is tailored to the individual client — and therefore more results-focused — because we provide modifications for every type of person: women, men, athletes, beginners and clients well into their 70s. Our studio is also differentiated by its uniquely welcoming atmosphere, where we know every single client by name. Finally, our memberships are up to 25 percent less than our competitors.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: Being a business owner is exciting and ever evolving. I’m detail-oriented and love creativity and innovation. Where else could I wear all of these different hats? However, it is the customers who drive me. Being able to manage a studio that clients have termed their “happy place” is a true honor. It is powerful to watch each person leave class feeling like the best version of himself or herself. It is even more fulfilling to hear stories about how our classes helped clients through difficult times.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Our concept in itself has proved challenging because there are many clients who find ballet-inspired fitness to be intimidating, even though our workouts are tailored for all levels. Since opening the Lone Tree location, we’ve learned to adapt to our clientele, who range from commuters to and from the area, stay-at-home moms, business professionals looking for a noon workout and everyone in between. We’ve learned to adjust our class times to accommodate all of those groups

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: The Ballet Physique started in 2009 as a private-class business in the guest room of my apartment with a handful of clients, a 4-foot wall-mounted barre and the occasional appearance from my two cats. At 24, I had virtually no business experience and was turned down by every bank I approached. It’s safe to say that I was carried by passion and a strong work ethic.
