House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio announces last Friday that he will resign from Congress at the end of October. (Steve Helber, The Associated Press)
Re: “My gracious, what has happened to our politics?,” Sept. 29 Jennifer Rubin column.
Hear, hear, Jennifer Rubin! I, too, wonder what has happened to our politics. But more than that, I wonder about what has happened to us.
I am a Democrat. Last week, I watched in amazement as Sen. Ted Cruz extolled his Values Voters Summit audience for their part in bringing about the resignation of John Boehner by their mere presence in Washington, D.C. I watched as the audience stood and vigorously applauded themselves. I listened as they shouted “Yes!” upon hearing that Boehner was no longer speaker of the House.
Is this who we have become? A people who totally disregard the 25 years of service a good man has given to his country? A people who discard manners and grace when faced with opposing views?
Thank you, Pope Francis, for reminding us and Congress about the Golden Rule. We need it.
