Boulder — A point of emphasis for the Colorado passing game coming into this season was to cut down on quarterback Sefo Liufau’s interceptions, several of which cost the Buffs dearly in close games last season.
So far this year, Liufau has shined in that area.
Since throwing an interception in the second quarter of the season opener at Hawaii, Liufau has thrown 105 passes (14 quarters) without an interception.
“Just being smarter with the football, knowing where to go, where the coverage is and where the weakness is in the coverage,” Liufau said. “Just taking what the defense gives you.”
It helps that the offensive line has given him good protection — he has not been sacked in the three games since Hawaii — and the running game has been productive.
“Our running game is better, our protection is good, he’s making good decisions with the football, our receivers are reading the coverages and running really good routes,” said coach Mike MacIntyre. “I think he’ll keep playing well.”
Liufau played much of the CSU game and all of the Nicholls State game with a painful throwing shoulder that was separated in the CSU game.
“It just really hurts to throw,” Liufau said, conceding that he was “all over the place” with his throws last week. He also has had a hard time getting in rhythm this season.
“I think thatap a fair statement,” Liufau said. “I’ve had pretty good games, but in terms of throwing the ball itap been hard to get into a rhythm. You’ve got to find a way to get the job done. It hasn’t cost us yet, but you definitely want to get into a rhythm coming up in these Pac-12 games.”
The first one is a big one, with Oregon coming to Folsom Field Saturday night.
