Saturday. The Metropolitan Opera’s live, high-definition broadcasts to movie theaters have changed opera in America. The stats are astounding. More than 17 million tickets have been sold and 2.5 million people now attend performances every season. The number of movie theaters carrying the series has grown from 98 in 2006 to 2,000 currently. The broadcasts began in four countries and are now shown in 70, across 12 time zones. The series returns for 2015-16 this Saturday with one of opera’s biggest stars center stage: Soprano Anna Netrebko, who sings the lead role of Leonora in “Il Trovatore,” Verdi’s opera about wars, duels and doomed love.
