Sunday-Jan. 17. The Denver Art Museum is staging a major retrospective of painter Fritz Scholder, who was — or wasn’t — one of the most important American Indian artists of the 20th century. Why the question? Because Scholder himself, despite his lineage as a member of the Luiseno tribe, didn’t identify himself that way. Still, he painted figures that explored the changing identity of Indians in the U.S. The museum explores the angles through “Super Indian,” a major look back opening Sunday. The show includes dozens of works, from 1967 through 1980, showing how Scholder developed a style of formal portraits influenced by the pop art movement of his day. Through Jan. 17.
