Wild horses that were rounded up by the Bureau of Land Management roam in the Sand Wash herd management area west of Craig in 2008. (Denver Post file)
Re: “Support for the BLM’s roundup of Westap wild horses,” Sept. 27 letter to the editor.
I’m amazed how some folks argue that a few thousand wild horses are not a native species and are solely responsible for range-land degradation — but never mention the hundreds of thousands of cattle that graze a lot of these same lands. I’ll grant you that horses are not a native species. But neither are the cattle that provide your steaks and hamburgers.
We nearly wiped out the millions of native cattle that once roamed this country — known as bison. We also nearly wiped out the native peoples who once called this land their home.
There would be no cattle industry without the horse. There would be no United States without the horse. The horse has every bit as much right to be here as the rest of us.
