Visual journalists from The Denver Post brought home three Edward R. Murrow awards for video reporting around mental health and cannabis, and for a story about a paraplegic ice climber.

and handed out Monday night in New York.

The Denver Post won the prestigious overall excellence award for the body of multimedia work including an intimate portrayal of a family that moved to Colorado for access to a marijuana extract that they hope will heal a child failed by conventional medicine.

This is the first time the Post has won the overall excellence award. The Post competes in the large online news category, against organizations including The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Videographer Helen Richardson and editor Eric Lutzens won the best sports reporting award for which detailed paraplegic ice climber Sean O’Neill’s ascent of a frozen waterfall in Telluride.

For her series of videos videographer Mahala Gaylord was honored for best news series.

The awards are traditionally regarded as broadcasting’s version of the Pulitzer Prize and have been a coveted honor since 1971.
