A 39-year-old man was accidentally shot by his father while recreationally shooting in the Mount Herman area of El Paso County, officials said Thursday afternoon.
The victim was conscious and breathing after the shooting that took place three miles north of Pikes Peak Road near Loi Creek and North Rampart Range Road. He is being treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries, said the El Paso County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Jacqueline Kirby.
The father of the victim, who is in his 60s, was trying to clear his gun when it fired, hitting the victim in his chest or abdomen, Kirby said.
Both father and son were inside a vehicle at the time of the shooting.
Deputies arriving on scene were trying to determine what occurred and if it was legal, Kirby said.
The names of the men involved have not been released at this time.
