DENVER (AP) — The largest nonprofit health insurer in Colorado is fighting its forced closure by state insurance regulators.
A Denver district court judge has been asked to reconsider the case of Colorado HealthOP. The insurer covers some 80,000 Coloradans but found out Friday the state Division of Insurance is closing it for 2016.
Colorado HealthOP found out last month that the federal government wouldn’t pay millions owed to insurance co-ops. The fund was designed to help insurers adjust to marketplace changes after the passage of the Affordable Care Act.
Colorado HealthOP says that state regulators erred in rejecting its plan for survival without federal support. The judge will have to decide quickly. Open enrollment for 2016 begins Nov. 1.
The Division of Insurance declined to comment on the lawsuit.
