Tom Tancredo speaks supporting Republican Candidate for Colorado Governor Bob Beauprez at the GOP field office in Boulder, Colorado July 2, 2014. (Mark Leffingwell, Boulder Daily Camera)

Re: “As GOP debate comes to Boulder, a clash of ideas on immigration,” Oct. 18 news story.

Thank you for good overall coverage of Republicans and immigration. However, I am disturbed The Post provided a platform for Tom Tancredo’s toxic and destructive ideas. The claim that undocumented people are “jumping the line” has no basis in fact. Not only have undocumented immigrants been barred from accessing federal benefits for almost two decades, but there has been no decrease in immigration in that time, so that is clearly not why immigrants are coming here.

The 13-year pathway to citizenship, which has popular bipartisan support, is a recognition of the fact that those who live here deserve the opportunity to stay. Why would we make our neighbors wait so long? Why would we require burdensome and unnecessary English exams?

We should focus our energy on becoming a more integrated society and moving forward together.

Elizabeth Murphy, Denver
