Jaide Bucher, Northglenn catcher, plays catch with hero, former MLB pitcher Jim Abbott

Northglenn varsity softball catcher Jaide Bucher has something in common with her baseball hero, former MLB pitcher Jim Abbott.

Abbott, born with one hand, played in the majors for 10 years and . And like Abbott, Bucher was also born with one hand. But Bucher plays, arguably, a more difficult position, and earned the .

Now a sophomore, Bucher got the trip of a lifetime where she got to not only meet Abbott, but also play catch with him while chatting about their experiences — something Jaide said, “doesn’t even seem real.”

Bucher is one of three athletes profiled in , “Win From Within,” that tells the stories of competitive athletes who overcame adversity in some way. Gatorade brought Bucher to L.A. to meet her hero as part of the “Win From Within” program.

“He told me just to never give up and do what I love,” Bucher said in a message. Here is the raw video footage of Bucher and Abbott meeting and playing catch with one another:
