COLORADO SPRINGS — Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is seeking help locating a cattle egret that escaped its exhibit during high winds Tuesday night.

The foot-tall bird resembles a small heron and is mostly white with patches of tan on its back, head and chest, said Amy Schilz, the zoo’s animal care manager.

Officials believe the strong winds that contributed to the bird’s escape also hindered its return, and that it’s likely still in the neighborhood, Schilz said.

“He isn’t a very strong flier, so we suspect he is still around The Broadmoor and zoo area. People should look in the top half of trees or near waterways. Or, if it’s raining, he’ll likely be on the ground taking shelter.”
