FORT COLLINS — When Minnesota pulled out a 23-20 overtime win over Colorado State at Hughes Stadium on Sept. 12, the two head coaches — in line with convention — met before the game for pleasantries.

“He seemed like a great guy, and I heard nothing but good things about coach Kill,” CSU coach Mike Bobo said Wednesday about the veteran who announced his retirement earlier in the day because of health issues.

Bobo recalled, “My two boys happened to run up while I was talking to him and just talked about how short life is. He was talking about make sure you enjoy your kids, and how his daughter worked with the athletic department. He seemed like a great guy. He loved football. He loved family. It’s unfortunate. I know he wanted to continue to coach, but he wants to be around for his family, too.”
