Interview with Bethany Smith, owner, baker and chef

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: Baking delicious desserts is such a wonderful way for me to show love to the people in my community. Given my background in culinary arts, I’ve always been passionate about creating new recipes and sharing with friends and family. I was always known just informally as “the dessert lady,” but people kept urging me to start a business. So I finally took the plunge and joined some local farmers markets. The rest is history!

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Sweet Little B’s is an organic, GMO-free cake bakery. Crafting delicious cakes with only the finest quality ingredients is our No. 1 priority. We’re committed to hand-making our beautiful cakes without wrapping them in fondant (which is neither organic nor delicious) and finding innovative ways to make things from scratch when an organic version isn’t currently available on the market. Environmental responsibility is such an important thing to me, and I truly believe that each of us votes with every dollar we spend. As a business owner, I have more “votes” to spend in the food revolution occurring in our country.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: My business model is centered on the act of spreading kindness, and it is such a joy to be able to do that on a larger scale. I love being part of peoples’ celebrations, and providing something that makes them happy is the best part of my job. Owning my own business has allowed me to make a positive impact in our local community and that is a profound source of happiness in my life.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: The biggest challenge that Sweet Little B’s currently faces is finding dependable, sustainable suppliers of organic, GMO-free ingredients. Although there are many more options available for bulk, organic supply orders than there have been in the past, sometimes it can be challenging to track down the quantity that a growing business requires. Through continued communication with the companies we work with and persistent pursuit of new ones, we hope to meet this challenge, and through doing so, expand the amount of organic products available to restaurants and the general public alike.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: Sweet Little B’s is a custom-order-only, online bakery. We are sometimes involved in events around town such as festivals and farmers markets, but we do not have our own storefront yet. We’ve partnered with the amazing donut shop, Glazed and Confuzed, and operate out of their commercial kitchen. If you would like to order a cake, simply call us or fill out an online order form, and then pick up your handmade cake at our commercial kitchen location.
