Zombie apocalypse on the horizon? You’ll have a reasonably good chance of surviving if you live in metro Denver, thanks to the large number of live people here who have engineering skills useful in defending against the undead.

Denver ranks No. 9 among the 10 metros with the best prospects of survival in CareerBuilder’s “totally necessary and 100 percent practical survey of the largest U.S. metropolitan areas best equipped to survive an actual night (or day) of the living dead.”

Boston offers the best odds. Stay out of New York. Really.

Among the cities with the best ability to contain the virus, Denver is No. 1 because of the high percentage of the population working in civil, electrical, environmental, materials, mechanical, nuclear and engineering technician jobs and the huge number of people employed in construction.

The relatively low population density helps, too, because the closer people live together, the more quickly the population is infected and the less time there is to organize a cure. (Again, stay away from New York.)

Boston is tops for the ability to find a cure, with about 24,000 people working in biomed research and other medical professions. Virginia Beach, Va., heavy on the military work, is most ready to defend against an attack. And Grand Rapids, Mich., where contract manufacturers make products for General Mills, Kellogg, Quaker Oats, Frito-Lay and others, offers the most secure food supply.

To create the interactive Zombie Apocalypse Index, which you can find , CareerBuilder used data from its Economic Modeling Specialists International unit to assess 53 metro areas with a population of more than 1 million based on skills and industry characteristics.
