Sweet cash

If your kids brought home more candy than you want them to eat, consider donating the excess to the Halloween Candy Buy-Back, a national program in which participating dental practices exchange cash and prizes for the sugary haul. Most youngsters are probably not willing to give up all of their candy, but they may be more willing when they learn the sweet treats will become part of care boxes sent to our troops overseas. To find participating dental practices, visit and enter your zip code. Then, contact the dentist office for Buy-Back days and times.

Coffee break

If you need a little pick-me-up while grocery shopping, you’ll appreciate this jolt of savings from Whole Foods Market. Through Nov. 3, get a small brewed tea or coffee at the grocery store’s coffee bar for just 25 cents. There’s no limit, but you probably don’t want more than one cup in a single shopping trip — unless you’re power shopping. wholefoodsmarket.com

Sub-stantial offer

Who better to celebrate National Sandwich Day than America’s most popular sub shop? To celebrate the condiment-filled “holiday,” Subway is offering a buy-one-get-one deal on Nov. 3 at participating locations. Customers who buy a six-inch or footlong sub, plus a 30-ounce drink, will receive a second sandwich for free (of equal or lesser value.) For maximum value, it might be wise to just share the drink with your lunch (or dinner) buddy.

That’s a wrap!

Thanks to Lorenzo Cain’s steal of second base in the first game of the World Series, everyone can “steal” a morning freebie at Taco Bell. The fast-food restaurant is giving customers a free A.M. Crunchwrap on Nov. 5 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at participating locations. Not all outlets serve breakfast, so check first. Limit one per person. It’s even tastier because, if a base is stolen in games 3 through 7, they’re offering the freebie again on Nov. 10.

Crafty ladies

Holiday craft shows may come and go, but there is a spot where more than 110 Colorado vendors sell their wares year-round. Unlisted (8262 S. University Blvd. in Centennial) is a 9,200-square-foot artisan and boutique marketplace overflowing with handcrafted jewelry, apparel, up-cycled furniture, home decor, beauty products, fine art and even homemade pies. Get crafty the first Thursday night of every month. Nov. 5 is ladies night. From 5 to 8 p.m., gals and their pals can sip cocktails and snack on munchies, as they shop the special discounts offered by vendors.

Go wild

After a long drought of no free admission since February, the animals are once again ready for budget-minded families. Bundle up and go wild with your own pack at the Denver Zoo for free on Nov. 2, 13 and 19. The zoo is on “winter hours” and open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Denver’s City Park. Be sure you’re through the gates by 4 p.m. as the grounds officially shut down at 5 p.m. Parking can be its own animal, so consider taking the bus, carpooling or biking.

Night at the museums

Denver’s Night at the Museums sees dozens of museums open their doors to the public for free on Nov. 7 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., as part of Denver Arts Week. Some of the participants include the Black American West Museum, Clyfford Still Museum, Denver Art Museum, Denver Botanic Gardens, Denver Firefighters Museum, Denver Museum of Nature & Science, History Colorado Center, Molly Brown House Museum, MCA Denver and Wings Over The Rockies Air & Space Museum. Museums in Golden include Dinosaur Ridge, Golden History Center, Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum and Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum. Each museum promises special entertainment and activities, including music, dance and storytelling. Plus, complimentary buses (starting from the Denver Art Museum) will shuttle patrons between museums, beginning at 5 p.m. However, the route is limited and does not include all participating museums, namely those in Golden, so check first.

Every Saturday, Laura Daily and Bryan K. Chavez at MileHighOnTheCheap.com compile “Cheap Checklist” to help smart shoppers find freebies, sales, discounts and deals. Know of a deal or sale? Send tips to info@milehighonthecheap.com 10 to 14 days in advance.
