Re: “Stop wounds to Colorado’s economy,” Nov. 1 guest commentary.

State Senate Majority Leader Mark Scheffel’s criticism of government regulations burdening the Colorado economy is nothing new, nor is the lack of specifics when criticizing the regulatory environment. It would be enlightening if Sen. Scheffel could cite specific rules he finds objectionable instead of generally blaming government regulations for the particular woes of his friends in the coal and oil and gas industries. In both cases, it is not regulations that are contributing to their current woes but economic forces. It is inarguable that regulations have gone a long, long way to improving our water and air quality since the Environmental Protection Agency was formed in the ’70s, so clearly not all regulations are bad for the public good. And if an industry is engaged in polluting and has to be regulated, so be it. Otherwise they are profiting from polluting our water and air at our expense.
