A bill is going through the Colorado Legislature that would require panel approval for mascot and team names. Several Native Americans testified how hurtful it is to have Indian team names, and the Lamar High School Savages in particular have been singled out for having a name that is considered offensive. Re: “Colorado weighs in on Adidas’ plan to oust American Indian mascots,” Nov. 6 news story.

I have a suggestion for those who support offensive Native American nicknames such as the Lamar High School Savages. Since, according to Lamar school administrators and students, the nickname Savages exudes pride and strength, let them keep the nickname. Just change the image used from an Indian chief to that of a United States Cavalry officer.

No problem, right?
