DULUTH, MINN. — The University of Denver and Minnesota Duluth played to a 1-1 tie on Saturday night at AMSOIL Arena.
Minnesota Duluth earned the extra point in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference in the second overtime in what was the first competitive 3-on-3 session in conference history.
DU sophomore Tanner Jaillet made a career-high 51 saves. He became the first DU goalie with 50 or more saves since Sam Brittain had a school-record 67 saves in a game against Minnesota Duluth in 2012.
“Tanner was outstanding for us tonight,” DU coach Jim Montgomery said. “We were really outplayed by UMD, and if it wasn’t for our goaltending, we definitely wouldn’t have gotten the tie. Full credit to the Bulldogs. They’re a talented, well-coached team, and they deserve to pick up the extra point in this one.”
DU scored first Saturday, with sophomore defenseman Adam Plant scoring his first goal of the season 15 minutes into the game on a wrist shot.
Quentin Shore and Nolan Zajac were credited with assists on the play.
UMD evened the score at 6:17 of the third period on a goal by Tony Cameranesi, who then added the game-winning goal in the third minute of the second overtime.
The Pioneers (6-3-1, 3-0-1-0) defeated Minnesota Duluth (3-4-3, 0-3-0-1) 3-0 on Friday night.
DU plays at Wisconsin next Friday and Saturday.
