HOLBROOK, Ariz. (AP) — A new company is taking over concessions services at the Petrified Forest National Park.
Xanterra (zan-TAYR’-uh) Parks and Resorts and its predecessor companies have held the contract for decades at the park near Holbrook. But the Greenwood Village, Colorado-based company didn’t bid on the latest one.
A family owned company, Ortega National Parks, won the 10-year contract and will take over in January. The company will open a new ice cream and refreshment shop at the Painted Desert Inn.
Other services could include all-terrain vehicle tours, a campground with vintage trailers and electric charging stations.
A gas station and convenience store at the park will close.
Ortega National Parks owns businesses in New Mexico and operates concessions at other national parks in New Mexico, Maine and California.
