Two female deputies have filed a federal workplace discrimination lawsuit against the Denver Sheriff Department and the city.

Samone Walker and DaShawn Walker said in the lawsuit that women are treated unfairly, exposed to more danger than their male colleagues and have high burnout and stress.

The deputies are asking for an unspecified amount in a jury trial.

City Attorney Scott Martinez declined to comment on the pending litigation.

The lawsuit offers insight into the difficulties of managing the crowded female unit at Smith Road.

The women are housed in a section known as Building 21, and it is “unreasonably hazardous” to deputies and prisoners alike, the lawsuit said.
