Fountain police say car thieves have been prowling neighborhoods between midnight and 5 a.m. looking for unlocked cars, stealing purses, wallets and firearms from dozens of cars.

Just since Oct. 3, police have been called to about 56 car thefts, according to a news release by Lt. Tommy Coates of the Fountain police.

“With the holiday season in full swing, criminals will look to take advantage of persons who keep any recently purchased merchandise stored inside their vehicles,” Coates warned.

Most of the car thefts were from unlocked vehicles. They have stolen computers, cell phones, guns and cash, he said.

“Please, never leave firearms located inside unsecure vehicles,” Coates said.
