DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — The Purgatory ski resort near Durango is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
The resort got its start when a local ski team needed a place to practice. Oil and gas developer Ray Duncan stepped in, and helped make it a destination ski area and an economic driver for the southwestern community.
According to the Durango Herald (http://tinyurl.com/ogwtdmt), the average number of skiers on the hills for the season currently ranges from 230,000 to 250,000.
