A Denver jail inmate serving a 90-day sentence for trespassing died Monday after being found unresponsive at the Downtown Detention Center.

The 54-year-old man, who was suffering from a terminal illness, was discovered unresponsive in his room on the third-floor medical unit by a nurse and Denver Sheriff Deputy who were making their rounds, according to a sheriff’s department news release.

They performed CPR and paramedics arrived at 8:15 a.m.

The man was taken to Denver Health Medical Center and passed away at 9:20 a.m. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death, the news release said.

The man’s name has not released, pending family notification.

Denver police are investigating the death, which is part of the jail’s protocol.

The inmate had been scheduled to be released on Jan. 7.
