Chaffee County authorities are investigating sexting incidents at a middle and high school in Buena Vista.

For the past two weeks, investigators have been fielding complaints about sexting at McGinnis Middle School and Buena Vista High School.

“We at the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office want parents throughout our county to be aware of these situations,” the county sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Authorities say sexting is becoming more prevalent among all age groups and parent involvement and intervention are key to prevention.

Anyone with information on the cases is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 719-539-2596.

Sheriff John Spezze did not return a message seeking comment on Friday.

In neighboring Fremont County this week, prosecutors announced they in a in Cañon City that involved at least 106 students.

“I think the investigation suggests that (this) was something the children didn’t understand,” 11th Judicial District Attorney Thomas LeDoux, whose jurisdiction includes Chaffee County, said of the Cañon City case. “The investigation suggests these were kids doing stupid kid things.”
