Helen H. Richardson, The Denver Post
Bashi Brown goes up for a dunk while swimming with other kids in the pool at the school at Skinner Middle school during Denver Camp. The day camp is offered to all Denver Public School kids from the 4th thru 8th grade. It lasts for 6 weeks and goes from 8:00 to 2:00 every day for 6 weeks. Hot breakfast and lunch are included and it is completely free for the kids. About 140 kids are participating in this year’s camp. Activities at the camp include arts and crafts, outdoor sports, swimming, drama, and photography.Mayor John Hickenlooper is seeking private money to support a massive new computer system that will pull databases together from Denver Public Schools, Denver Human Services and Big Brothers Big Sisters so that the at-risk kids who live in Denver will have case files on them anyone can access. Despite privacy concerns, people are excited. Big Brothers Big Sisters CEO Dave Deforest-Stalls says he could look up kids his mentors are working with and see what their school problems are and what they’re struggling in. The company, Palantir, has agreed to give the database to Denver for free as a guinea-pig to try and lure other cities in, but the mayor needs private cash to support the training and upkeep. He has sought out private foundations for the money. Some are wary.Helen H. Richardson/The Denver Post–>
