No wonder it was so difficult to make a Top-10 list. 2015 was the year of “peak TV” with a record 409 scripted series, according to a poll released today by FX Networks. That’s 33 more than in 2014 and almost double the number just six years ago.
The significant gains by basic cable and digital streaming services drove the historic increase.
Streaming services including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Crackle and Yahoo carried 44 scripted series this year, up from 27 last year. For those keeping score, it’s worth noting that streaming services dominated this year’s Golden Globe Awards nominations.
Basic cable carried 181 scripted series, up from 169 last year.
The tally confirms the, who forecast the total number of original series surpassing the 400 mark this year. At the time, Landgraf declared “there is simply too much television.”
