AURORA — The Aurora City Council on Monday night approved financing for the long-awaited extension of East Sixth Avenue to connect it to E-470.
Aurora will contribute project and borrow another $2 million from the E-470 Authority. The measure passed unanimously by the council on first reading.
City Councilwoman Marsha Berzins said making the final link to E-470 will help move traffic significantly in northeastern Aurora for those who are going to or coming back from work.
“People won’t get tied up in traffic,” Berzins said. “It’s important for the people of Buckley (Air Force Base) and the residents of Aurora.”
East Sixth Avenue will be extended 2 miles to East Sixth Parkway, said Dennis Eden, a special projects manager with Aurora’s Public Works Department. It will connect near Buckley Air Force Base to an interchange at E-470 that is already built.
Several augment alternatives are currently being considered.
“It’s a critical piece,” Berzins said. “We finally have enough money put together to get it done.”
