Not all energy production in Weld County is created equal.
If a proposed ordinance goes through, solar installations would no longer be allowed the same access to agriculturally zoned land — which covers about 75 percent of the county — that oil and gas drilling operations enjoy.
Oil and gas drilling is considered a use by right. The proposed rule would limit solar development to land zoned for industrial uses, keeping owners of farmland from installing small solar projects and preventing solar companies from buying property to turn into solar facilities.
The commissioners took the proposal to the public for the first time Monday. The public has two more chances to weigh in before the ordinance may be adopted.
