An ice climber died Wednesday after a fall near Redstone, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office said. The unidentified man in his 40s went climbing about 4:30 a.m., the department said in a news release. The climber was reported missing about 12:30 p.m. When emergency personnel arrived at the popular climbing area about 17 miles south of Carbondale, they were told a friend of the climber had hiked into the backcountry to look for him. The friend discovered that an ice pillar broke, causing the climber to fall from an unknown height. The climber was dead when crews arrived. Recovery of the body is expected to take place Thursday, the department said. The identity of the victim will be released after notification of next of kin.
