U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew will make a stop in Denver next week for a roadshow event promoting saving for retirement and better access to banking, credit and loans for low-income people.

On Tuesday, Lew will headline a town hall on “financial inclusion” with Cary Kennedy, Denver’s deputy mayor and chief financial officer. Mayor Michael Hancock this month to oversee three empowerment centers and the Bank on Denver program, which aims to connect residents to safe, affordable banking services.

Lew’s visit coincides with that have similar goals for other parts of the country. The department also has started the , which creates retirement accounts for workers whose employers don’t offer retirement savings plans.

The town hall is set to begin at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at Galvanize, a co-working space on Platte Street northwest of downtown. It will be open to the public with limited space, so prospective attendees are encouraged to RSVP via e-mail to jay.salas@denvergov.org.

“We’re honored to host the treasury secretary here in Denver to promote the new tools that are available for families to help them manage their money, save for their future and get out of debt,” Kennedy said Wednesday afternoon. “About 21 percent of Denver’s residents live below the poverty line, which is why we want to make it as easy as possible for residents to get financial coaching and access to secure, affordable banking services.”
