Rocky Mountain Human Services is a nonprofit that provides services to people with developmental disabilities in Denver. (RJ Sangosti, The Denver Post)

The situation at Rocky Mountain Human Services is terrible and must be addressed. However, all of Colorado’s community-centered boards (CCBs) should not be painted with the same brush.

Developmental Disabilities Resource Center is the CCB that serves Jefferson County. DDRC has worked with Jeffco County commissioners since shortly after our founding in 1964 and has been completely open with stakeholders and government.

For example:

We never use mill-levy money for individuals outside Jeffco. The board approves the annual budget and reviews financial statements monthly. The board meeting agenda includes two times for anyone to speak to the board.

Eleven of 16 persons on the board are family members of a person with a developmental disability or who have a developmental disability themselves.

The DDRC website (www.ddrcco.com) contains all meeting notices and the annual financial audit.

Election of a portion of the board by family members is held at the annual meeting and advertised in advance.

Regarding the Rocky Mountain Human Services debacle, I offer an old quote by Thomas Sowell:

“It is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong.”
