MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Nuggets waived forward Kostas Papanikolaou on Thursday, according to an NBA source. Denver cut ties with him prior to his contract being guaranteed.

Papanikolaou has had a roller-coaster ride with the Nuggets. The Nuggets acquired him last July as part of the deal that sent point guard Ty Lawson to the Rockets. But the Nuggets waived him in late September, prior to training camp.

They re-signed him on Nov. 5 and he played in 26 games, averaging 2.6 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. He started six games.

The Nuggets avoided guaranteeing his salary for the remainder of the season by releasing him on the deadline day to make such moves.

The Nuggets have 14 contracts on the roster now. As of Tuesday, players can be signed to 10-day contracts.

Yahoo Sports first reported the transaction.
