BOULDER COUNTY — Rescue workers located two missing backcountry skiers after they got lost Wednesday night above the Old Caribou Townsite near Nederland, and helped them back to the trailhead around midnight.

Jason Douglass, of Superior, and Mathew Smith, of Ottawa, Ontario, got confused about their location late in the afternoon, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. The two men, both experienced backcountry skiers who had the gear to spend the night outdoors, were able to contact a relative via cell phone to explain their predicament.

The sheriff’s office, along with the Nederland fire and police departments, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group and Front Range Rescue Dogs, responded to the area and found the men uninjured.
