‘s agent said he warned the Avalanche goaltender that his former girlfriend seemed unstable after the agent noticed she got a tattoo swearing lifelong allegiance to the hockey player shortly after they began dating.
Paul Theofanous testified Monday that Evgeniya Vavrinyuk got the tattoo on her arm at a time when she barely knew the hockey player.
“Having sex really doesn’t mean you know (someone),” he testified Monday during a civil trial in Denver District Court.
Vavrinyuk against Varlamov in 2014, claiming he had beaten her for years before he was . Prosecutors declined to file the kidnapping charge and later against Varlamov.
“He didn’t believe it was a long-term relationship,” Theofanous testified.
that after a Halloween party with other members of the Avalanche on Oct. 28, 2013, Varlamov kicked her, held her to the floor by putting his knee on her chest and dragged her by her hair at his apartment.
Varlamov denies those claims.
On Oct. 30 of that year, Varlamov sent Theofanous a text telling him Vavrinyuk was threatening him with legal action, the agent said. The goalie then told him that after the party, she punched him hard in the jaw and chest, the agent said.
Theofanous said he told Varlamov to return to his apartment, pack her belongings and take them to the front desk in the apartment house but warned him to stay on the phone throughout the process.
Soon, he heard Vavrinyuk screaming, he said.
“If you don’t open this door, you are going to spend the night in jail,” Theofanous testified she said.
Varlamov didn’t open the door but was concerned about where Vavrinyuk would spend the night.
“Don’t worry about that. We will get her a hotel,” Theofanous said he told Varlamov. He warned Varlamov not to speak to Vav rinyuk if she called, and instead to text her saying he would get her a hotel room and buy her a plane ticket to her home in Russia if she wanted that.
Theofanous was the final witness to testify.
Closing arguments are scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, weather permitting.
