The leaders of The Denver Post and The Charlotte Observer are supremely confident in their hometown teams in Super Bowl 50 on Sunday — so a friendly wager was in order.
When the Broncos win, the Charlotte newspaper will be sending “the No. 1 IPA beer in the country (Hop, Drop and Roll), brewed right here in the Carolinas,” Ann Caulkins, publisher and president of The Charlotte Observer, said in an e-mail to Mac Tully, publisher and CEO of The Denver Post.
“We’ll also send along our region’s world-famous barbecue. I promise you, it’s the best party you’ll never have!”
If the Panthers win, Tully, who solicited the wager, is offering a broad selection of Colorado craft beer and bison steaks, which “would make for a fine supper in the unfortunate event that the game had a tragic outcome.”
Tully added: “I know the Broncos are excited to introduce (linebacker) Von Miller and some of his friends to (Panthers quarterback) Cam Newton.”
Caulkins accepted the wager with grace and spunk.
“We love our team. It’s the face of the new NFL,” she said. “Von Miller, bring it on!”
