Dozens of University of Colorado employees received bonuses totaling $140,000 for their work on new payroll and finance systems that got off to a rough start late last year, leaving some workers without paychecks in December and January.

On New Year’s Eve, 47 CU system employees received one-time payments of $1,000, $2,000, $5,000 or $10,000, depending on their level of involvement with the upgrade, which had been in the works for two years.

“I wouldn’t characterize them as bonuses, but a number of people received additional pay for additional work,” said Ken McConnellogue, spokesman for the CU system. “The project was over and above their day jobs.

“When people have substantial duties added to their plate, it’s fair that they receive some compensation for that.”
