A 23-year-old man was formally charged Friday with vehicular homicide while driving under the influence in a fatal Lakewood crash earlier this month.
Derek Romero also faces charges of reckless driving and driving under restraint in the Feb. 4 wreck at the intersection of West 5th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard, court records show.
The two-vehicle collision left a 56-year-old man dead, Lakewood police say. Authorities have not released the man’s name.
Detective Tim Marquez says Romero was heading south on Wadsworth when he ran a red light and slammed into the 56-year-old’s vehicle.
“It was a pretty violent crash,” Marquez told The Denver Post on Monday.
The 56-year-old man died on Feb. 10. Romero was arrested the night of the wreck.
Court records show Romero posted $20,000 and was released. He is next due in court March 15 for a preliminary hearing.
