KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Medical technology company Stryker is buying Physio-Control International Inc. for $1.28 billion, which will help expand its product offerings and broaden its global reach.

Privately held Physio-Control develops, makes and markets monitors and defibrillators; automated external defibrillators; CPR-assist devices; and data management and support services. Physio-Control’s offerings will complement Stryker’s Emergency Medical Services division, company officials said in a statement.

Physio-Control, based in Redmond, Wash., is a portfolio company of Bain Capital Private Equity. The company had fiscal 2015 sales of $503 million, up 6 percent from the prior year.

The transaction is expected to close at the start of the second quarter.

Kalamazoo-based Stryker Corp., which has more than 25,000 employees at sites across the globe, bases its sports medicine division in Greenwood Village.
