This time last year, Pablo Mastroeni’s mustache was the talk of MLS — nay, the world. The manicured black handlebar was perfect — what all mustaches strive to be when they are but stubble on an upper lip.
The Colorado Rapids’ coach said he began growing it eight games into his team’s epic winless streak that closed out the 2014 season. The streak ultimately .
The mustache achieved its full handlebar glory by January 2015. That’s when the Rapids coach told me .
But the Rapids’ struggles continued. By May, .
And by June 18, the mustache was gone.
“.”
If you look at the numbers, it’s obvious why the mustache had to be sacrificed.
While Mastroeni wore the ‘stashe — roughly Sept. 14, 2014 to June 18, 2015 — the Rapids went 2-9-9. On the MLS scale of three points for a win, one for a draw, that works out to .75 points per game. The Rapids were also outscored 26 goals to 15 in that span.
Sans ‘stashe, the Rapids are 15-24-9 in league games under Mastroeni. Sure, that’s still poor, but considerably better at 1.125 points per game.
Maybe the mustache had nothing to do with it. Maybe it’s a coincidence. But for the superstitious folks among us, let me just say, R.I.P. Pablostache. 2014-15.

Happy Birthday, Michael Jordan! His Airness turns 53 today. And we like to imagine he can still dunk from the free throw line.
