MOJAVE, Calif. — Sir Richard Branson feted his new spacecraft Friday in a massive hangar with pumping music, swirling lights and, of course, champagne.
The introduction of the SpaceShipTwo, christened Unity, came 16 months after its predecessor came apart during a test flight, killing the co-pilot.
Branson said his employees “picked themselves up at the end of 2014. They redoubled their efforts and they remain absolutely committed to our shared goal … to make space accessible in a way that has only been dreamt of before now.”
SpaceShipTwo is designed to be flown by a crew of two and carry up to six passengers on a high-speed suborbital flight to the fringes of space.
