Interview with Brandee Goedecke-Shilling, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: Several years ago, I was about to have for surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome and decided to try acupuncture first, without huge expectations. After my first treatment, my pain was so dramatically reduced and I physically felt so good, that I decided right there (in my car) that everyone should have an opportunity to try and use acupuncture. I opened Unity Community Acupuncture in the fall of 2012 to bring high quality, affordable, accessible, awesome acupuncture to Denver and it’s surrounding areas.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Unity Community Acupuncture is a community-style clinic. This allows us to help as many people as possible. We do this by treating in a community room, where the setting feels more like a place to do yoga or meditate with others. (Don’t worry, unlike private acupuncture clinics, you keep your clothes on.) We also charge on a sliding scale ($20-$40 with an additional $15 consultation fee for the first visit). This makes it easier to afford getting acupuncture. When people can get acupuncture frequently, they can more quickly see results. Group treatments are how acupuncture is done in China, and the atmosphere of healing it creates is a phenomenon you have to experience for yourself.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: Helping the people we work with! Seeing even the most skeptical person improve their health, and watching how that transforms them as a person. Relieving pain, increasing fertility, improving sleep, digestion and energy — it’s always a joy (beyond compare) to see someone struggling with their health heal in a natural way.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Our biggest challenge is getting the word out that acupuncture can be affordable, and that it is effective in treating far more than just pain.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: Unlike private acupuncture clinics, you keep your clothes on. The way we treat is different too. All the practitioners at Unity have learned a special style of acupuncture called the balance method, taught by the late Dr. Richard Tan. By treating this way, acupuncture is more effective and results can be quick. We also have an herbal pharmacy where we can create custom formulas.
