Shawn Matthias at morning skate
As outlined in my online story, Shawn Matthias Wednesday went through the Avalanche’s optional morning skate with linemates Carol Soderberg and Blake Comeau Wednesday and is ticketed to play with them later against the San Jose Sharks.
.
In addition, here’s what Patrick Roy said: “I feel that they are capable of playing against top lines. . . I’m curious to see how (Matthias) will fit in with Comeau and Soderberg.”
Roy said, “Like I said to him this morning, we showed him a bit our structure, how we want to play in the different zones, penalty killing. I want him to work hard, have fun, enjoy the ride. I think he’s going to be a good complement to the line of Soderberg and Comeau, I think he’s going to be able to play against good lines. I think he can bring some offense as well.”
Said Soderberg: “I think he plays the same game as we do, so hopefully it’s going to be good really quick. He’s pretty strong, he likes to work down low, also go to the net. I think that’s how we want to play, me and Blake, we want to play a strength game, so I think it’s going to be a great fit for us.”
Said Comeau: “I’ve played against Shawn for awhile and I know what kind of game he plays. He’s a big body, a power forward, a good complement for me and Carl. He can hold onto it down low, he can go to the front of the net. He had 17 goals last year, so he’s proven he can put the puck in the back of the net. And I think he’s responsible defensively as well. If Patty wants to put us out against other teams’ top lines, that’s a challenge we look forward to as well.”
