BOULDER — The Boulder County treasurer is warning property and homeowners that they could lose their property if they fail to pay their property taxes, even if the lien is for less than $800.

That’s what happened to four Boulder County residents after their tax liens were purchased by a real estate agent who wants the property. Boulder County Treasurer Paul Weissmann wants delinquent taxpayers to know what happened and how they can avoid it.

Weissmann is concerned because 59 mobile home liens for 2014 taxes were bought in November, and 44 of those have still not been paid and are at risk of being taken over.

While those owners will have about a year to pay their liens, Weissmann said that as more people purchase tax liens as investments, he’s concerned more owners could lose their mobile homes. “There are companies out there making a lot of money convincing folks to buy a tax lien and make money,” Weissmann said. “There’s going to be more and more people buying these.”
