Almost $24 million in federal grant funds were awarded Tuesday to homeless programs throughout Colorado, with the majority of the money heading to initiatives in the Denver area.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development says the money will go to 62 service agencies throughout the state.

Projects in and around the city will get $19.3 million at a time with when Denver’s leaders .

By comparison, El Paso County programs were given $1.9 million.

The HUD grants come as part of the department’s national Continuums of Care Program.

“The (program) supports the communitywide commitment to end homelessness by providing funding to enable state, and local governments and nonprofit partners to work quickly to rehouse individuals and families experiencing homelessness,” Rick Garcia, HUD’s Rocky Mountain Regional administrator, said in a statement.
